bassinet/cradle dilemma

SO, I've been searching baby things lately, and of course want to purchase EVERYTHING that looks cute or safe or important for a baby in some way -- but one thing that I haven't decided whether we should purchase it or not is a Bassinet or Cradle or whatever you want to call that first sleeping place of the baby. Mom said that for Dan I think they just let him sleep in a dresser drawer until he could sleep in a crib. Soooo, question!

Did you use a bassinet/cradle or something similar - was it worth purchasing? WOuld it have mattered if you just used... something around the house for example? If you DIDn't use one for your baby(ies), what did you use?

Also, I'm still craving that rectangular middle school pizza.

We just used a crib. She looked so tiny when we put her in it, but it worked just fine! It was also nice having her in another room because new babies squeak and squawk and make all kinds of noises when they are sleeping.

well, that's easy enough! thanks!

we got both the crib and the bassinet, but I will let you know my thoughts once our little one makes her presence.

I had a wooden porta-crib which was nice to have in the room, but I agree with Kecia, the baby will make lots of noises (squeeks, etc) and might keep you awake. Jaley was a loud sleeper; I kicked her out of my room and into her crib when she was 3 days old. Save the money! Oh, and DON'T buy a high chair!!! Get one of those booster seats that attach to a chair at the table. They even come with a tray. High chairs are bulky. Boosters are portable and you can throw the entire thing in the dishwasher! We did the booster with Kerst and Kendall. They loved sitting at the table with the family!

I have a Co-sleeper. It is the best money I ever spent on a baby item. It is awesome! I still use mine for Kate, so if you wanna come see what it looks like you can come right over. Marie (I wrote all this then realized I was signed in as Mike)

Just a personal opinion but unless you plan on having the baby in your room forever don't worry about a special sleeper. Total waste of money. We bought a play pen (pack n play whatever) and made sure it had the bassinet feature. So it isn't as aesthetically great but kills two birds with one stone. Or just get nothing but a crib...

We had both a bassinet & crib because I had Elise sleep next to my bed forever (we actually just moved her crib into her own room last month, yes . . . she was even sleeping next to my bed in her crib!) I like the basinet because it was smaller and less bulky by the side of the bed, and they usually come with features like vibrate and are rockable so you can rock them back to sleep without picking them up (both of these features I used very often). I was also so worried about SIDS that I liked being able to just peek over the bassinet every few hours to make sure she was okay rather than going into her room (I am also a totally obsessive person). I think if I did it again I would still have the baby by my bedside for the first while, and then move them to their own room after a few months, but everyone has what is best for them.

I would also like to recommend the Fisher Price Rainforest Peek-A-Boo Leaves Musical Mobile. It has all the features I was looking for in a mobile (including a remote so you don't have to go back into the babies room and risk them seeing you) but it wasn't released yet when I was buying my mobile.

okay, so here was my problem. Jesse was wierd for the first couple of weeks and would only fall asleep if i nursed him. And then if i tried to put him in his own bed, he would wake up and cry. Okay well before i say that I should say that he didn't sleep through the nights for the first week. it was...well a little miserable. My mom gave me a bassinet that was so cute and i slept in it as a baby, but jesse maybe slept in it all of 3 times...and by the time he would sleep in his own bed, he was this huge chunck that wouldn't even fit. haha. so anyway, it is different with everyone, but you can ask anyone and they will tell you that it is nice to have a crib or something close to your bed for the first few months of their lives until you put them in a seperate room..did that all make sense?

okay so after reading everyone else's comments i have more to say. I agree about the booster seat instead of the high chair. Let me just tell you they are WAY easier and I am still trying to find a good one to get rid of my ridiculous high chair, even though it is cute. Every baby is different though and i think a really good idea is to get the playpen with a basinet type feature, i hear those are very handy! Let me know what you do! Are you showing your prego-ness yet? I need to come see you

Now I am no mommy, but when I was brand new my parents had the money for a nice stroller, but not for a cradle. I slept in my stroller (the kind that you can lay the back down so it is flat) until I was a couple months old and then moved into a crib.
My mom hated the idea of putting a baby in a drawer, so when Scott was born they got a cradle and really liked it.
I don't know if you have heard the stroller thing yet. It may be hard to find that kind of stroller, but then it does double duty.

I have a cradle that Golden's dad made for us and I love it. Cradles are small so you can just stash them and little girls can use them for their dollies later.

I love how you ask opinions! i wish i would have done that when i was pregnant! i just learned everything on my own, which isn't that bad! i TOTALLY agree with alot of people that are saying that every baby is different! i had friends that just got the baby a crib, but yes, it can be big and babies usually dont have their own room for a while because your nursing and they are up many times during the night.. don't want to walk back and forth. i've also known people to give the baby a crib and it's own room, and the mom just sleeps in there on a cot or something for a while (not my choice) what i DEFINITELY recommend is something packable! we got calvin a pack-and-play! these things are AWSOME! it's a crib/changing table/playpen in 1! plus, it compacts down to use when traveling which is SO nice! they are smaller than a crib and fit nicely in any size room! however, like many, because of nursing and being fussy, calvin slept in my bed with me alot so a bed divider sleeper might be good as well! you'll learn exactly what your baby needs! no worries!

We borrowed a bassinet from a friend, which was perfect since we were in a one-bedroom apartment where there was no room for a crib. Once she grew out of the bassinet, she slept in the pack-n-play until we got a crib. Well, until we got the crib set up (it sat in the garage for a while). The bassinet was nice for having the baby in our bedroom. I liked having the baby in the bedroom since I had to get up to nurse her every couple of hours.
